Breckenridge,
Michigan
- A Country Village Along the Way.
www.breckenridgemi.com
Breckenridge has a proud history of home town values
and industriousness. In the mid 1800's this
village took part in building the famous plank road.
Started in 1869, the road ran from Saginaw to St.
Louis, a distance of 32 miles and was completed in
1870. Not only did the plank road greatly
relieve the expense of transportation, it helped
open up development in this entire region.
The road is commemorated by the sidewalks made to
appear as planks.
Today
Breckenridge enjoys a lifestyle that epitomizes
Michigan as we love to remember it. When you
walk along the street, people stop and pass the time
and, if you are a stranger they will probably ask
where you are from. The churches and schools
are within walking distance of everywhere and there
are active community organizations working to
preserve the past and prepare for the future.
Breckenridge-Wheeler Area Historical Society, Inc.,
established in 1994, has two museum sites located
along the 'plank': The Plank Road Museum
commemorating the Saginaw and St. Louis Plank Road,
a state road completed in 1870 and now known as M-46
and Drake Memorial House, a museum representing a
country doctors home at the turn of the century.
