Vermontville, Michigan
The beautiful maple valley where Vermontville lies today was settled in
1836 by Rev. Sylvester Cochrane, a circuit preacher from Vermont.
He organized a Congregationalist settlement from there to this area and
many of the traditions from that time survive today. The original
building for the church is now the Historical Museum. Yet,
Vermontville is a town proud of itself and looking forward. The
main street was recently renovated with wide brick walks and new
plantings.

Vermontville is full of surprises like their excellent theatre "The
Revue". The theatre company (269.367.4455 -
Email) has several productions a
year of excellent quality and shows generally sell out. The
historic building was originally (details) and is a feature of this
charming small town. In the same structure is the town library
(517-726-1362)
with programs for young and old all year.

Even if you aren't looking for a new Michigan home
town, Vermontville is well worth a visit during its famous
Maple Syrup
Festival, held the last weekend in April. You will find three
days of old time Michigan fun including an Arts & Crafts show, Talent
Shows, an old fashioned carnival and a parade. To keep things
going there is food galore, maple syrup demonstrations and samples and
constant entertainment. One of the things I always like about this
festival is the incredible number of motorcycle riders from across the
state who show up if the weather is descent. There have been years
when there are 500+ bikes there. The village even sets aside a
special parking area for them. There is even more in this small village. There is the Thornapple
river, camping, rolling hills and a country way of life in a small town
that makes one think of living this way again. If you get to visit
Vermontville, Michigan (Map) let me
know what you think. |
