Not all scenic trails are way up north.
This park has excellent hiking and skiing trails and is just a few
miles outside the Terrific Town of Ionia, Michigan. On a scale
of 1 - 10 I have to give the scenery a good solid 10, and this is
one of my favorite spots for a "20 minute vacation". You can
pull off the road, M-21, park and be wandering along a trout stream
in only a matter of minutes. Fully refreshed you can be back
on the road 20 minutes later or decide to linger a bit longer and
have your lunch among the trees.
The
beautiful and historic Palmer Lodge is one of the special treasures
that grace this park. There are three picturesque stone
bridges, wooded picnic areas along the stream and four miles of
hiking trails. There are more than 20 wooded
rustic campsites, tennis courts and covered pavilions for outdoor
banquets, reunions and gatherings. For even more fun there are
tennis courts. In the winter the park remains open
for some activities. Of course there are the aforementioned
hiking trails that are open for skiing and a huge sledding hill.
All of this is less than a tank of gas from Lansing.
