Lewiston Drive

This is an excellent reason to get off Interstate 75 and head EAST for a change.

As the weather warms and thoughts turn north watch for Exit 264 off I-75 just north of Grayling.  The exit sign says Frederic and I recommend you get off there but head east instead of west.  Here is a very nice winding road past the Hartwick Pines and on to Lovells.  Carry on going east and follow the signs to the Terrific Town of Lewiston.  This road takes you through pines and maples and past the twin lakes.

Once you reach Lewiston, this has been about 45 minutes, you have some choices.  If you are in a hurry you can turn north and reach Rt. 32 to get back to the highway.  Or, continue east on Rte. 612 for some really great country.  When you come to Rte. 33 you can head north into sinkhole country or head south into Oscoda county where the Michigan Magazine Museum is located.

If you have the time, continue on 33 to Fairview and head east 72.  When you reach 65 you have more choices.  You can go north a mile or two and turn on McCullum Lake Rd. and follow that around back to 72, keep your eye peeled for Black Bears.  Or, turn south on 65, and just south of Curran, the Black Bear Capitol of Michigan, take the side road to McKinley.  This eventually turns into F-32.  Either way, east or west, will take you through Jack Pine and Kirtland's Warbler country.  East will bring you back to 65 and west will bring you into Mio and the road back to I-75.
