Houghton - Calumet U.S. 41 from
the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Copper Harbor was just added to the
list of National Scenic Byways. The scenic overlook on U.S. 41
on the north edge of Hancock provides a stunning view of the
Keweenaw waterway and Portage Lake with the Huron Mountains as a
backdrop. The Brockway Mountain Drive, meaning the
10 mile high road route, on 26 out of Copper Harbor will catch you
by surprise in any season. This is a real mountain road with
spectacular views of the valleys and Lake Superior.
The Covered Road is narrow and unpaved for most of its 3 mile
length. Take the Canal Road west out of Houghton, turn left on
Coles Creek Road. Follow it to the end and enjoy the canopy of tall
maples. Ontonagon Drives
From downtown Ontonagon there are several wonderful short drives:
West to the Porcupine Mountains about 15 miles along the shore of
Lake Superior.
North to Calumet
East all the way to the Keweenaw Bay at Baraga.
All of these any time of year.
