| The Sauk Heritage Trail - U.S. 12 is perhaps the most historic road
in Michigan. It was the main thoroughfare from Detroit to
Chicago through the wilds of Michigan at a time when it marked the
border of what was thought of as "up north". History is everywhere
along the trail. The flags of four nations have flown over
Niles. Wing Museum in Coldwater was a trading post.
Walker Tavern served as a stagecoach stop then and serves as a
visitor center today.
This road served as an Indian Trail, Stagecoach Route and
Automotive Highway. When you take this drive be certain to
visit McCourtie Park.
The park is near Somerset and is one of the true hidden treasures in
the Irish Hills of Michigan. |
