The Michigan Waterfall Drive

Warner Falls - MichiganSeasons change and we all have our favorite but waterfalls are beautiful in all seasons.  Here is a wonderful day trip during which you can view at least four waterfalls in a 4 hour period.  If you decide to travel a bit further you can see five or six and 3 of these are viewable without leaving the road.  If you are staying in one of the nearby Terrific Towns of Escanaba, Gladstone or Manistique, this makes for a great day trip.

There are a couple of ways to take this trip but essentially it follows 94 from just south of Munising where you can see Alger falls from the road and Wagner Falls after a short walk, west to Gwinn where you pick up 35 north toward Palmer.  Palmer is where you can see Warner Falls which is pictured in the upper left.  This photo was taken from the roadside.

Laughing White Fish FallsAlong the way there are two other falls of note.  One is Laughing White Fish Falls which is north of 94 about midway through the trip.  Laughing White Fish falls is one of the more spectacular fall, over 100 feet, but it does require a bit of a hike to get to.  When we went, this is where we paused for a nice picnic lunch and just some quiet time near the running water.

This entire drive takes a few hours and you should not be in a hurry.  The scenery is wonderful and the stretch from Gwinn up past Palmer is gorgeous but it is quite a winding road.

Now here is a little secret.  Whichever way you go, whether west to east or east to west, you will come to the junction of 94 and 67 just south of the town of Chatham.  Between that junction and the town is a little park with an old snow roller in it.  Take a few minutes and walk down the path at the back of the park, it is marked by an archway through the fence.  Just a few yards into the woods you will come to a small hidden waterfall that I have never found on any tourism map or guide.
