Higgins Lake is located 5 miles west of
Roscommon. Higgins Lake has been noted as being the 6th most
beautiful inland lake in the world. Higgins Lake was named
after Sylvester Higgins, the first state topographer. The
crystal clear lake was formed as the glacial ice sheet
retreated. The Cut River connects Higgins Lake to Marl Lake
which gives it ample opportunity to fish for perch, trout
and pike. There are two state parks and several access sites
around the lake. There is excellent camping, launch sites,
hiking trails and cross country skiing. The lake is known
for its clarity and hard sandy bottom. It is noted to be
approximately 140' at its deepest point. There are two
sunken islands and one island that is inhabited called
Treasure Island. Higgins Lake is approximately 10,000 acres
and lends itself well to all types of water crafts and
sports. It is a 20.5 mile drive or bike ride around the lake
with bike trails the majority of the way. There is a Regatta
held on Treasure Island each year that people come from all
over to enjoy as well as a winter fest held in February.
Higgins Lake is truly a 4 seasons playground. |
