Jack
Pine auto Tour
The
Jack Pine Auto Tour is a self-guided drive through a very special
part of Oscoda County in northern Michigan. This jack pines
area is home to the Kirtland's Warbler due to improved eco-system
management.
The drive is enhanced by interpretive signs along the way that
explain the unique methods required to produce habitat that will
attract this once endangered species. Some of the stops along
the way include, clear-cuts, planned burn areas and at least one
nature walk.
Nearly all nesting occurs in jack pine stands where the soil type
is Grayling sand. This is an extremely well drained sandy soil with
low humus and nutrient content.
The Kirtland's warbler habitat is closed to the public during the
nesting season. Guided tours are offered each year. For
the most up to date information, contact the Mio, Michigan ranger
station.
