historic sauk trail
The
towers in this photo are still there. At one time they were a
popular day trip destination for travelers out of Detroit. You could
climb to the top and view the spectacular Irish Hills. They
are closed to the public
History is everywhere along the trail. The flags of four nations
have flown over Niles. Grosvenor Museum in Jonesville celebrates
Christmas the old way.
Walker Tavern served as a stagecoach stop then and serves as a
visitor center today.
This road served as an Indian Trail, Stagecoach Route and Automotive
Highway. When you take this drive be certain to visit McCourtie
Park. The park is near Somerset and is one of the true hidden
treasures in the Irish Hills of Michigan.
