McBain
is a community of 1,000 residents within the city limits, with
another 14,650 residents in the outlying county. Located in southern
Missaukee County, McBain's recreational opportunities make this an
attractive and appealing place to live and work, with hunting,
fishing, snowmobiling, boating, golfing, and many other activities
right outside the door.
Historical Facts About McBain In the 1870's,
Scotch-Irish lumbermen from Canada settled the McBain area, living
in log cabins and establishing sawmills. Dutch immigrants also
arrived in this time and began farming. In 1871, Missaukee County
was established and the McBain family arrived from Canada. In 1880,
the first area school opens.
From 1887-1893, the village of Owens grows and is named the Village
of McBain. Gillis McBain serves as the first Council President. By
1901, McBain boasts a steam-powered gristmill, telephone services,
and electricity. In 1906, Dr. Masselink begins his practice, to
continue through 1961. In 1907, by act of the State Legislature,
McBain is officially a city, making it the smallest city in the
United States.
In 1908, McBain Grain Company opens for business and continues to
serve the public today. The McBain State Bank was organized in 1912,
and banking continues at the same location today.
With the advent of high speed Internet access in the city of McBain
and especially in the Industrial Park, businesses located in McBain
have the upper edge on many of their big city competitors.
By 2000, McBain had opened a progressive industrial park, undertook
a major highway expansion to facilitate shipping and trucking
capabilities, and was well on the way toward business-quality
