Alabaster, Michigan

gypsum crystalWhen you are on your way into Alcona county to enjoy Harrisville, you may notice signs warning of dangerous ground south of Tawas Bay.  You may also notice the signs for the town of Alabaster.  This was the sight of a huge gypsum mine that produced such fine gypsum it was used to polish mirrors and gypsum bay is nearby.

If you turn off the road and head into Alabaster, Mi. you can almost feel the great excitement of the discovery long ago.  The area where the mine was located was originally purchased for $50.00, a gun and a dog and was sold later for $10,000.  Plaster was made here from 1870 until the production was. moved.
