Port Sanilac, Michigan

Port Sanilac is a Michigan gem on the shore of Lake Huron.  Steeped in the history of the Great Lakes and the Lumber Era, Port Sanilac is a thriving community today.  This is a great place for a day trip.  You will find plenty to do for a day or a weekend enjoying the attractions and the local arts scene.

Divers flock here to explore the Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve. There are at least four shipwrecks to be explored in this preserve. An amateur skin or scuba diver can easily view two of them. Some of the shipwrecks with more obstructions should only be viewed by more experienced divers. For those that would rather stay dry, the Sanilac Shores area offers other such unique attractions as the Port Sanilac Lighthouse, Sanilac Petroglyphs (early American Indian drawings and writings), and museums.

Originally known as Bark Shanty, Port Sanilac has a long and colorful history that is inextricably tied to Lake Huron.  The great storm of 1913 left its mark and just outside of town are the only native American petroglyphs known to exist.  These remarkable carvings were only revealed after the great forest fires swept through the thumb in the early lumbering days.
