Pigeon, Michigan is a modern thriving village on the Great Sauk
Trail which, back in the day, marked the boundary of the frontier
wilderness of northern Michigan.
The village was named for an heroic Indian chief named White Pigeon.
According to legend, around 1830, tribes near Detroit were planning
to destroy the village in revenge for government seizure of lands.
Chief Wahbemme (white pigeon?), at great peril ran the entire
distance from Detroit to warn the locals. It is said that the effort
cost him his life.
