Old Indian Trail - empire, Michigan
The Old Indian Hiking and Ski Trail follows a winding pathway through the silent wilderness near Empire Michigan. The Old Indian Trail is accessible from the main road M-109. There is a place to park right at the trail head and trail is great fun in every season.
The terrain is mostly flat and straight with some easy hills and small curves making the going easy even for beginning cross country skiers. However, on the advanced loop there is a downhill run that is rather steep.
Eventually, after meandering through the pine and oak trees of the forest, the trail offers up a lovely view of Lake Michigan and the famous sand dunes. This beautiful coastal lowland was under water thousands of years ago so, the vegetation varies. There are even a few hemlock trees mixed in along the way.
