In
South Haven, Michigan the history of the influence of the
Great Lakes on out growth and development has been preserved
at the Michigan Maritime Museum. The collections and
exhibits are extensive. The collection of historic
photographs is just great and the oral histories and stories
will fascinate young and old alike. In addition, you

Exhibits are thorough and well done. There are Great
Lakes Heritage - Coast Guard - Life Saving and more.
The War of 1812 exhibit is described as, "This exhibit
features first-person testimonials, artwork, everday
objects, clothing, and military items. It conveys not only
the culture of the early 19th century, but also the Great
Lakes role in the national drama of the War of 1812."
No history of the Great Lakes is complete without mention of
fishing. The Evelyn S, an original fish tug
is located on the Museum Campus with a viewing platform
providing a view inside the vessel. Visitors are able to
board this historic Great Lakes fish tug to get a glimpse of
the life of a fisherman.
The Archive holds a significant collection of oral
interviews with individuals who worked in the maritime
trades in Michigan. Subjects include commercial fishing,
commercial shipping, boat building, the U.S. Coast Guard,
the U.S. Light Saving Service, and others. An in depth
collection of interviews related to commercial fishing and
the U.S. Light Saving Service exists. The Library serves as
one of two designated repositories for the oral history tape
collection of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers
Association.
