A Bit of History
Westcroft is the oldest family owned and operated farm in the state of Michigan, established on July 6, 1776. These gorgeous gardens have an interesting history. Early on the farm grew hay as a primary crop. This was the food for the horses that powered the early trolley cars in Detroit. When automobiles made the horse-drawn trolleys obsolete, the farm transitioned into a nursery growing plants that could thrive in acidic soil. Then came World War II. The farm transitioned again to produce turkeys to feed the armed forces. There was more change coming but it all lead up to the botanical wonder that Westcroft is today.

Westcroft Botanical Gardens - Grosse Ile

Westcroft Gardens & Farm has operated on Grosse Ile for 247 years. It was established just 2 days after the United States itself was formed. There are nature trails, open green spaces, and acres of woodlands. If you are looking for an easy walking trail, with a wide variety of flowers and plant life, you can't do better than the trail through the Westcroft Botanical Gardens. The walking trail winds through four and half acres of trees, shrubs, evergreens, and hybrid azaleas created by the family. These gardens are beautiful, the trail is great, and a lot of it is in the shade, making it very pleasant even on the hottest of days.

Westcroft is currently owned by the 7th generation of Macomb descendants and operated by the 8th generation.
